Smokey Elestial Quartz is a rare and visually striking variety of quartz that combines the grounding coloration of smoky quartz with the complex, layered crystal structure known as elestial growth.

What Is Elestial Quartz?

Elestial quartz—sometimes called skeletal, hopper, or jacare (alligator) quartz—is characterized by intricate, stepped, and etched crystal faces. Instead of growing as smooth, single-point crystals, elestial quartz forms through fluctuating growth conditions, causing multiple terminations, ridges, and terraces to develop. This makes each specimen highly unique.

Smoky Quartz Coloration

The smoky brown to deep gray coloration comes from natural radiation interacting with trace amounts of aluminum within the quartz crystal lattice over long geological time periods. The color can range from light champagne to nearly black (often referred to as morion).

Geological Formation

Smokey elestial quartz typically forms in:

The elestial structure indicates rapid or interrupted crystal growth, often combined with changing temperature and chemistry. These complex conditions are what produce its layered, “ancient” appearance.
